Karan Johar has found a new love for period dramas and multi-starrers. Four months after the big announcement about Kalank, the filmmaker has now given a green signal to yet another historical drama – Takht.
On Thursday morning (August 9), cinephiles woke up to one of the biggest Bollywood announcements of 2018 by Karan Johar. The 46-year-old director-turned-producer is gearing up for his most ambitious project ever.
Titled Takht, the period drama has already grabbed eyeballs. And more so for its ensemble star cast. KJo has managed a casting coup of sorts by getting Alia Bhatt, Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Janhvi Kapoor, Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pednekar and Anil Kapoor together for his forthcoming film.
It’s not every day that you get to see Ranveer, Kareena, Alia and Janhvi in one frame, but when you have Bollywood’s most popular director making a film, everything falls in place.
So before the film goes on floors, here’s what we know about the film so far.
Karan Johar is a name synonymous to candy-floss romantic sagas in Bollywood. From Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to Kabhi Alvida Na Kehnaa to Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, his films have been high on romance and drama. However, the 46-year-old filmmaker is planning to shift gears with Takht. At a time when period dramas have found a great audience, KJo, too, seems keen to try his hand at this genre. Set against the backdrop pf Mughal empire, Takht is the story of a family, of ambition, of greed, of betrayal, of love and of succession. It revolves around an epic battle for the throne. “Takht is about war for love,” says Karan Johar.
Karan’s return to direction
Karan Johar has been busy shuffling between his production ventures, his reality show stints, his acting cameos for the last few years. And now finally after two years of hiatus, Karan is returning to the director’s chair with Takht. While his last direction Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was right up his alley, it would be interesting to see Karan take on a completely new genre with his next film.
Biggest casting coup ever
Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pednekar, Janhvi Kapoor and Anil Kapoor in one film. Now, that’s something. Only Karan Johar could have pulled off a casting coup of this sort by getting Bollywood’s best talent under one roof. And fans can’t thank him for bringing together a spectacular star cast for his next.

The only catch is that the fans will have to wait for two more years to Karan’s magnum opus on the big screen. The film is expected to go on floors by early next year and will hit the screens in 2020.
