Saif Ali Khan was 20 when he tied the knot with Amrita Singh. While Amrita was an established actress, Saif was yet to begin his career. And the 49-year-old actor recently revealed that his ex-wife played a pivoral role in shaping up his career.
In an interview with Mid-Day, Saif credited Amrita for his Bollywood success. The Laal Kaptaan actor said, “I ran away from home, and got married at 20. And I’ve to give Amrita [Singh], my ex-wife, credit for being the only person who taught me to take it all [work/show-business] seriously. She said you can’t hit the target while laughing at it. That’s when Parampara happened.”
Saif made his Bollywood debut with the 1993 film Parampara, two years after his wedding to Amrita Singh.
“Yashji called to say he was looking for a fourth lead, or something. I was like, great; yeah, anything. I’ll do it. It’s like investment in stockif Yash Chopra is taking him in Parampara, [the industry believes] let’s invest in this. For me, it was as simple as, this has to work. There’s nothing else. That focus was required. And taught to me, and I inculcated,” he added.
Despite having worked in Bollywood for almost 8 years with a number of hits to his credit, it was Farhan Akhtar’s Dil Chahta Hai which changed Saif’s career forever. It was one of the defining films in her career.
Talking about the film, Saif revealed that he wasn’t too sure about how to approach the character of Sameer in film. And he used to often take advice from Aamir and other people on the sets. But it was Amrita Singh who asked him to believe in himself, and do it the way he wanted it to do it.
“I was quite immature while doing it, and everyone on set including Aamir said, ‘Why don’t you do it in a different way.’ And I used to get confused. I came home and I spoke to my ex-wife about it. She was like ‘Why are you asking other people about how to play your role?’ Then, I said that I am going to do it my way. And when it worked, people really liked the character. That gave me a lot of confidence.”
Meanwhile, Saif is gearing up for the release of two films – Jawaani Deewani and Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior.
